Pergo is a Swedish based company was established 120 years ago for the purpose of manufacturing vinegar for the European food market. As company grew it expanded its business and afterwards shifted its focus to the specialty chemicals. In 1923 company established a process for manufacturing decorative laminates for table tops. In 1977, the company initiated the idea for laminate flooring and the product was introduced to the European market in 1984. From the end 1980's to early 1990's Pergo expanded its flooring operations throughout Europe.
The trade name Pergo has come to represent laminate flooring to most builders and consumers although the industry is a competitive one with numerous other laminate manufacturers. Formerly called the Perstop Flooring Company, Pergo is the recognized leader in laminate flooring. Its laminate flooring products are sold through thousands of retailers including Home Depot and Lowe's.
Pergo products were launched in the U.S. in January 1994 into 107 stores on the East Coast and Midwest and by summer had gone national into 850 stores. Based on this achievement, in 1995 Perstorp planned to establish its permanent U.S. headquarters and factory location, where it would produce laminate flooring. In 2001 Pergo separated from the Perstorb Group and listed on the stock exchange o-list. In 2003 Lowe’s home centers started selling Pergo’s products in North America. In 2004 Pergo diversified its line of products with the launch of hardwood flooring in the United States. Same year new plant for the patented simple solution four in one molding product opened in North America. During 2005 major plant expansion was completed in North America. Simple solution United States LLC formed to market company’s patented products to new consumers.
Today Pergo is one of the world leading producers of laminate flooring in the world. Five years after first visiting Raleigh and four years after building the 130,000 square foot factory, Pergo Inc., a subordinate of Pergo AB, has improved its sales from $24 million to more than $250 million. Pergo sold its flooring products from 3,500 specialty retailers, the Home Depot and Lowe's.
