Dupont founded as a gun powder mill in July, 1802 by Eleuthere Irenee Du Pont on Brandywine Creek near Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Dupont Corporation was initially an explosives manufacturer. The company established quickly, and by the mid nineteenth century Dupont had become the largest supplier of gunpowder to the United States military, supplying according to a rough estimate near about half of the powder used by the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Only one hundred years ago, the company took interest into other markets including chemicals. Today, Dupont has a presence in over 70 countries and Dupont offers a wide range of innovative products and services for markets including agriculture, nutrition, electronics, communications, safety and protection, home and construction, transportation and apparel. Dupont also established two industrial laboratories in the United States, where they began work on cellulose chemistry, lacquers and other non explosive products. Dupont's Central Research Department was established at the Experimental Station, across the Brandywine River from the original powder mills.
